English renderings
quench; extinguish

Meaning

Helios and Adonis are described as quenched and shining (VIII.15; LVI.5). The middle/passive participle expresses the extinguished side of that pairing. Adonis’s circling seasons and Helios’s rays give different settings, so the repeated formula does not by itself establish one physical or seasonal mechanism for both.
