Sabazios

Meaning

The hymn addresses Sabazios as “father” and as “son of Kronos” (XLVIII.1). Only the sonship names a parent; the divine name identifies the recipient. The separately attested Σάβος in Hippa’s hymn is related naming evidence, not an ordinary case-form of Σαβάζιος.
