rooting; foundation

Meaning

Acheron holds the roots or foundations of earth in Plouton’s hymn (XVIII.10). The noun gives earth an underlying support within the chthonic landscape. It is distinct in formation from ῥίζα and does not, merely by occurring, invoke a technical system of four elemental “roots.”
