English renderings
gentle; gently

Meaning

In appended Ares, πρηῢ accompanies the shedding of radiance from above (LXXXVIII.10). The English takes it adverbially, “gently,” while agreement with neuter σέλας also permits “gentle radiance.” Both constructions temper the god’s brilliance; the printed form alone does not force a choice between them.
