English renderings
making one shudder

Meaning

Ares and Daimon are fearsome (LXV.4; LXXIII.1), while Rhea delights in mortals' awe-inspiring cries (XIV.6). In the latter line the cries bear the adjective, not mortals as a class. The shared shudder-language can thus characterize a deity or a powerful sound.
