Force; strength; impulse

Meaning

The Prayer invokes the holy force of Hephaistos and the goodly force of Herakles, respectful periphrases that stand for the powerful gods. In the appended Ares hymn, LXXXVIII.14, the sharp force of the speaker’s own θυμός is something to restrain. The same strength-word can therefore honour divine power or identify a troubling personal impulse.
