English renderings
rule; hold under control

Meaning

Hera, Plouton, Nike, Aphrodite, Health, and Sleep exercise power over the persons or shares named in their hymns. The passive at XXVII.8 instead makes rivers and sea the things controlled by the Mother. Death loosens nature’s firmly held bonds at LXXXVII.4. These uses share control but differ in agency and voice; not every form is a title meaning ruler.
