put to sleep; still

Meaning

At LIII.4 Dionysus is grammatically the agent who puts a triennial, Bacchic, holy period to sleep. The explicit accusative is the time-span, a striking construction that the preceding participle of resting does not erase. A smoother paraphrase about his own sleep may help the sense, but should not silently replace the printed verb’s transitive grammar.
