renown; glory

Meaning

The noble renown of contest depends on Nike at XXXIII.6–7. The noun is the subject continued into “rests upon,” not the act of fighting itself. An apparatus alternative at XXXIII.9 reports κλέος against adopted τέλος, a good completion: renown and successful outcome are related but not the same noun at that locus.
