hidden depth

Meaning

Persephone holds Hades’ gates beneath the earth’s hidden depths; nymphs and Erinyes have homes in recesses. The noun gives a concealed location without specifying that every inhabitant is a dead human. In the nymphs’ line the depths are water-pathed, an important local distinction from a generalized underworld setting.
