English renderings
woodland-ranging

Meaning

The Nymphs are ὑλονόμοι at LI.10, dwelling in or ranging the woods. Here the first component has its woodland force. Proteus's use of ὕλη for material elsewhere is no reason to turn these woodland Nymphs into governors of metaphysical matter.
