- earth-holding
Meaning
Poseidon receives the same earth-holding address in Prayer.5 and XVII.1, paired with his dark mane. It marks his relation to the earth even in a hymn strongly concerned with sea-power. It is distinct from the earth-shaking epithet that describes an effect of his force.
