English renderings
tear apart, rend

Meaning

Zeus tears the tunic or heavenly covering in XIX.16–17 and then releases the shining thunderbolt. The nominative participle διαρρήξας continues the agency of the addressed god; the bolt is the object released, not the agent doing the tearing. Clothing language makes the atmospheric covering something that can be violently opened.
