light-giver; illuminator

Meaning

Selene is called a light-giver at IX.5. The feminine agent formation names what she supplies, distinct from the more directional καταυγάστειρα elsewhere. The apparatus attributes αὐγάστειρα to Abel against αὐγήστειρα and αὐγήτειρα; the adopted spelling is preserved as the lookup form rather than silently harmonized.
