English renderings
bright; gleaming

Meaning

Nature is bright at X.10, and Zeus releases a gleaming thunderbolt at XIX.17. The form ἀργῆτα in the latter identifies the adjective’s stem. This is neither idle ἀργός nor a serpent-name homograph. At X.10 the apparatus attributes ἀργής to Abel against ἀρετῇ, so brightness there depends on the adopted reading.
