shore; beach

Meaning

The shore is the point where the sea goddess breaks waves on land and rocks (XXII.4), but it is also the setting of Aphrodite’s light Thyiadic leap on sand (LV.23). The noun supplies the same land-water boundary to two quite different scenes. The wave’s impact should not be carried over into the goddess’s dance.
