English renderings
wild; untamed

Meaning

Dionysos is wild beside “unutterable” and “hidden” at XXX.3; Apollo is wild beside “light-bearing” and “lovely” at XXXIV.5. The epithet gives each deity an untamed force while allowing other, more approachable qualities alongside it. Neither occurrence by itself means that the god is cruel or lives only in the countryside.
