Meaning
Sanguis sulphuris is sulphur’s blood, a figurative name for its inner power and dryness. The dialogue expressly rejects the alchemist’s identification of it with an ordinary oil of sulphur.
Use in the book
Saturn says freed sulphur gives its blood as medicine in gratitude. He defines that blood as the inner power and dryness alleged to congeal quicksilver into gold and restore metals and human bodies. The same exchange limits human preservation to death’s appointed term and warns of fatal excess.
The alchemist replies with familiar preparations of sulphur oil. Saturn’s ironic praise of his interpretive ability precedes a direct correction: this blood is given only to those who know how to free sulphur. In the subsequent dream, a wound made by Salt releases milky water instead of blood. The changed image supports transformation within the allegory, but does not authorize identifying all named liquids as one literal preparation.

Translation in this edition
The translation keeps the irony of the oil exchange and “instead of blood” in the dream. The figurative medicine is not a safe or identified pharmaceutical substance.

Meaning
