Meaning
A millennial occurrence recurs at an interval of a thousand years. The Sphere's visit is specifically described as a permitted act of preaching once in that period. The source of the permission is not identified. The schedule supplies the encounter with historical gravity, but it also exposes revelation to administrative anticipation: Flatland's rulers possess records of previous visits and prepare to suppress the next.
Use in the book
The domestic scene initially presents the new millennium as an occasion for looking backward and forward. The narrator and his Wife remain awake while the family sleeps; the last sand falls just after the visitor has secured privacy. A large division of historical time coincides with a small, intimate interruption. The scale of the event grows only when the Sphere explains the rarity of his commission.
His language of a gospel and an apostle makes the Square more than a curious observer. He is being prepared to transmit what he learns. The long interval also contributes to the visitor's urgency and impatience. When the Wife approaches during their struggle, the Sphere fears that the fruits of a thousand years of waiting will be lost. The mission's supposed importance helps him justify secrecy, pain and ultimately forced removal of the pupil from his plane.
The official meeting in §18234 discloses a competing use of the same calendar. On the first hour of the first day, the highest Circles read the minutes of earlier meetings and renew orders against claims of revelation. The authorities are not innocently surprised by every anomaly. The President knows from the secret archives that similar manifestations occurred at the two previous millennial commencements. Repetition has generated a machinery of containment rather than a public tradition of inquiry.
The Sphere's appearance before the Council might seem designed to leave incontestable collective evidence. Instead it produces frightened junior councillors, endangered guards and the imprisonment of the narrator's brother. Social differences determine who can retain the secret and who must be silenced. A spectacular manifestation does not equal successful communication when its witnesses are subject to coercive institutions.
The final phrase millennial Revelation therefore carries disappointment. After seven years of imprisonment, the chosen apostle has no converts. The immense waiting time contrasts with the apparent absence of a transmissible result. Yet the memoir remains an attempt to exceed that failure by reaching readers in some other dimension. The visit is neither a comfortably fulfilled providential plan nor an empty event; its consequences remain contested in the act of writing that reports them.

In this edition
The notes identify possible resonances of biblical thousand-year periods while stopping short of naming an authority the narrative leaves unnamed. The local calendar and the retained 1884 second Millennium reading are treated separately from any claim about Christian dates.
