Meaning
The young friend and poet identified by the historical note as François du Breil de Marzan, author of La Famille et l’Autel.
Use in the book
François matters as an example of qualities Guérin believes he lacks. The letter and verses received in May seem to spring from a soul that is fresh, transparent, and consoling. Poetry comes naturally to him like water from a fountain, in contrast to the laborious self-consciousness Guérin repeatedly describes in his own efforts. The disparity does not bar friendship: he explicitly consoles himself with the thought that friendship can arise from contrasts. An earlier entry shows François bringing an older married friend to religious retreat and communion. Guérin admires the tender reversal of expected authority, in which youth guides age. The text gives that older friend only as M. de La M..., and the present article does not turn those initials into a secure identification. Later Guérin goes to La Brousse for days of friendship and consolation, then returns in tears. Across these scenes François represents a possible unity of faith, affection, and unforced poetic utterance, encountered as a person rather than abstractly asserted as an ideal.
