Meaning

Involution is the movement toward increasing material limitation; evolution is the return toward developed life, mind, and spirit. Outpouring and indrawing are the principal images for the pair.

Use in the book

VII begins creation with a lowering of vibration until gross matter appears. The return swing then individualizes what was initially compact and undifferentiated. Life and mind become increasingly evident, and the completed cycle ends with withdrawal into THE ALL.

XI recasts the sequence as rhythm and compares it with the outbreathing and inbreathing of Brahm. The biological and historical examples of birth, maturity, decline, and renewed life are gathered under the same broad pattern.

In this edition

The paired terms and their capitalized images are retained. The source's Involuntary stage at VII.10 is recorded as printed rather than silently treated as a new technical stage.

Reading the argument

Evolution here is a cosmological and spiritual term. It is not interchangeable with biological evolution, and the narrative gives neither a measured chronology nor a mechanism of inheritance. Its direction toward the source is a premise of the system.
