Meaning

David and the Psalms supply several different speaking positions: the faithful oath-keeper, the recipient of lifelong divine teaching, the witness who will not be silenced and the assertion of enduring truth. They should not be read as one interchangeable scriptural motto.

Use in the book

At pp. 147–1482 the holy dwelling and the oath kept to a neighbour support the admonition of fidelity; the source explicitly names the fifteenth Psalm. At p. 163 the adaptation of Psalm 71 inserts strength and Elixir into the arm to be declared to future generations. This is a substantive reinterpretation, treated separately under Arm of God.

At p. 182 David is explicitly named as Khunrath takes up the proclamation of truth in the great congregation. The margin cites Psalm 40:10. The enduring truth of the Lord in the p. 176 margin cites Psalm 117:2 and supports the stability of the true foundation.

The psalms thus do more than certify a general pious attitude. Different passages are recruited for obligation, perseverance, publication and doctrinal constancy. Exact wording and numbering should follow each local citation, with modern comparisons to other numbering systems kept distinct.

Source note

The p. 182 modern note observes that “truth” takes the place of “righteousness” in the compared biblical wording. The change belongs to Khunrath’s application.
