Historical definition

Harmel is the seed of wild rue.

Meaning

The definition identifies a part of the plant, not the whole herb. The seed qualification should remain visible in a modernised reading and in any comparison with another plant name. No preparation or application is given.

Use in the book

Mandella is similarly defined as the seed of black hellebore, while Daura names hellebore without a plant part. These examples show why a short botanical entry can still make an important material distinction. Harmel should not automatically be expanded into a remedy or a modern botanical species.
