Historical definition
Mandella is the seed of black hellebore.
Meaning
The plant and the part are both specified. Black hellebore is the source; its seed is the immediate material named. Replacing Mandella simply with hellebore would lose the limitation to a part of that plant.
Use in the book
Locustæ similarly names a particular plant part in a particular state, tender branch tips. Such entries show how much a short botanical equivalent can depend on retaining a small qualification.
