Meaning

Balgus is the named speaker credited with a saying in the Turba: understanding the regimen exceeds reason unless divine inspiration gives it.

Use in the book

The parenthetical quotation occurs on page 135 within the account of how Philosophers can know before completing their work. Its place is important. After divine disclosures and a human master have been named, Khunrath describes knowledge through the Light of Nature, also according to God's will and enlightenment; Balgus's saying reinforces that qualification. Page 136 then unfolds reading, contemplation, and observation.

The reference therefore does not abolish natural inquiry. It frames its possibility through illumination while leaving its particular practices in place. Balgus has no separate biography or sequence of operations here; the name identifies the voice to which the rule about understanding is attributed.

Translation in this edition

The source names Balgus directly. The modern note's identification of him as a Turba speaker clarifies the reference without supplying a historical life.
