Stobaeus, Volume II: About This Edition
p. 2About this edition
This Greek and English translation of Stobaeus’s Anthology, Volume Two, follows Curt Wachsmuth, Ioannis Stobaei Anthologii libri duo priores, volumen II (Berlin: Weidmann, 1884), the companion to Volume One’s source. It includes the Greek title and all surviving anthology text through II.46.22.
Chapters 1–9, 15, 31, 33 and 46 are complete. Chapters 10–14, 16–30, 32 and 34–45 retain headings only. This edition covers printed p. 1 and pp. 3–264 in full. The translation is complete. The full-volume editorial review is complete.
Greek and English are paired passage by passage, with Greek first and English second. The PDF edition places them on facing pages; this reading edition preserves the same passage identifiers and footnote numbers. Explanatory notes accompany the English text. References to PDF pages identify the fixed pagination of the companion PDF edition.
The Greek has been transcribed from the scanned pages. The scan’s defective machine-readable text is not used as the textual authority. Spacing, apostrophes, and line wrapping are regularized; significant supplements, rejected wording, and the reconstructed joins within the Didymus and Epictetus passages remain visible.
The translation scope is the surviving Greek anthology text. Wachsmuth’s full Latin apparatus, his catalogue of manuscript scholia, and his scholarly indexes are not translated as part of the anthology. His notes are consulted and explained where they affect the reading or its interpretation.
