Book II Chapter 7 · II.7.11d.4–II.7.11d.5

Ancient Greek

p. 306

Pardon and One’s Own Vice

II.7.11d.4

They say ⟨further⟩ that pardon is not granted ⟨to anyone by a person who has understanding; for it belongs to the same person both to grant pardon⟩ and to think that the person who erred did not err through his own fault, whereas all who err do so through their own vice. Hence the refusal to grant pardon to those who err is appropriately stated.399

Leniency and Punishment

II.7.11d.5

They say that the good man is not lenient. For the lenient person seeks to set aside punishment according to desert; being lenient, supposing that the punishments prescribed by law for wrongdoers are too harsh, and thinking that the lawgiver assigns punishments contrary to desert belong to the same person.400
