Sal Lumen and Spiritus Mundi Philosophici: Book One · Chapter 8
1621 pp. 53–55 · scans FR073, FR074, FR075Since this spirit is present in every body as the author of generation and corruption, it necessarily has a threefold operation: through its dryness it vivifies, through its coldness it coagulates, and through its moisture it gathers and joins together. For this reason it has been given the name of triple or threefold earth, namely vitrifying, saline and mercurial; for everything made in the world is made of salt, glass and mercury. Yet Paracelsus’ principles are salt, sulphur and mercury, with glass placed fourth, as though he meant that all things composed of the first three are reduced to the fourth as their ultimate end, since nothing further can be produced from glass by the industry either of Nature or of art. But I wish to prove my opinion by the following example and reasoning: in animals, bones are consolidated and hardened through vitrification, while flesh and nerves are formed together through salt and gathered together through mercurial moisture. In plants, the shells of almonds, pine nuts, walnuts and hazelnuts, and every kind of fruit stone, may likewise be called vitrified, as may the shells of tortoises, snails, oysters and similar animals produced by land and sea.
