Dedication to the Duke of Lorraine and Bar
Sal Lumen and Spiritus Mundi Philosophici: Dedication to the Duke of Lorraine and Bar
1621 Unnumbered preliminary pages · scans FR016, FR017What I have better reason to fear, my Lord, is the reproach Your Highness may make against me for so rashly employing your greatness and your name to protect my labours, which are unworthy of so illustrious a Maecenas. At least I ought to have been content with having boldly profaned them once already by placing them at the head of the verses I presented to you some time ago, without once more abusing your august patience. Yet I am resolved to tell anyone who wishes to blame me for it, even Your Highness yourself, that I would much rather be thought insolent in my desire to discharge some part of what I owe your generous bounty than deprive myself of the continuance of your favours through a cowardly and shameful act of ingratitude. Besides, my destiny naturally carries me this way, for Heaven caused me to be born only to die, MY LORD, Your most humble, most obedient and most indebted servant, DE NUYSEMENT.
