It was this powerful athlete, my Lord, who first opened for me the strong barrier defending the entrance to that broad philosophical arena in which so many valiant champions have run and contested the prize proposed by thrice-great Mercury. He bound me to follow his steps, however slowly and at however infinite a distance, by the encouragement and precepts which he deigned to give me from my youth, out of regard for the Prince whom I had the honour to serve. With a kindness uncommon among men of his rank, he had already made me a participant in what he held dearest, sharing with me works without equal and designs which seemed to have nothing merely human about them. If, therefore, a few flowers from his garden happen to be recognised in this bouquet which I offer Your Highness as a gift, I should be forgiven. Plato himself, to whom the epithet divine is given, did not scruple to display before his posterity as his own the sacred relics which he had gathered in the temple of Socrates.
