1621 pp. 302–303 · scans FR302, FR303But just as God stationed the burning cherub with the flaming sword to guard the tree of life, so Nature established this watchful, fire-spitting dragon to bar entry to the garden where she planted the precious tree bearing golden apples: that is, the knowledge of the most hidden secrets of her treasure. The learned ancients would not commit these to writing at all, but taught them only by word of mouth to those they judged worthy. This caused those great and admirable sciences to vanish and, with the passing of time, to be considered by the ignorant as stories invented for amusement. Esdras foresaw that this would happen through the banishments, killings, flights and captivities of the Israelite people. Fearing that such arcana would perish, because without the benefit of writing human memory could not endure very long, he assembled all the sages who remained, seventy in number. With him they set these things down in as many books, as he himself testifies when he says: ‘After forty days the Lord spoke, saying: Make public the things you have written first, so that everyone may read them. But preserve the last seventy books to give to the sages of your people, for in them are contained sight, understanding and the source. And I did so.’
