Sal Lumen and Spiritus Mundi Philosophici: Book Two · Chapter 2
1621 pp. 114–116 · scans FR134, FR135, FR136Thus in the generation of things this substance is separated from earth’s body by the operation of the heat flowing into it, taking or retaining nothing of that earth, but using it merely for its support. From the beginning earth has served only as a receptacle and storehouse for celestial influences, or rather as a vessel in which this spiritual matter performs its operations. This will be treated more clearly, with evident demonstration, in the next chapter, where I shall discuss separations. It would be a small achievement to separate things if after separation they remained useless and inactive. Nature’s aim is to give life through separating, to avert death, which arises only from the abundance of excrements suffocating the pure and natural substance. I mean natural death, not violent and enforced death. If the seeds of things remained for ever buried in this excrementitious earth, nothing would come into the light and receive the benefit of life. But Heaven’s power through its vital influence draws them out in the primitive spirit, which, filled with that influence, distributes and extends it into every species and each one of them, according as their nature and composition require. Vivification therefore proceeds from the purification the stars perform in pouring down their influence; with this also flows a power of increase and restoration. For, being in continual movement, they are also continually active in pouring down influence, and consequently in perpetual vivification, ceaselessly adding life to life.
