Abeille athénienne... !
Et-toi qui sacrifiois si souvent aux grâces, dont tu fus le statuaire. Si ce qu’on dit de ta jeunesse est vrai, ô le plus sage des Grecs, tu les rendois présente dans tes discours et visibles dans tes moindres paroles, plus encore qu’elles ne l’étoient dans tes sculptures !
Un esprit de sagesse s’exhale de ces lectures et pénètre l’âme ravie...

Athenian bee...!
And you who so often sacrificed to the Graces, whose sculptor you were. If what is said of your youth is true, O wisest of the Greeks, you made them present in your discourses and visible in your slightest words, still more than they were in your sculptures!
A spirit of wisdom breathes out of these readings and penetrates the enraptured soul...

Joubert’s notebooks return to the work of thinking and writing, the demands of friendship, and questions of faith, beauty and conduct. This edition pairs the French with a new English translation, preserving the order of the chosen source and the unfinished character of its fragments. Dates and source references allow readers to follow a thought through time or return to its printed context.
Historical Text and Translation
The French text follows André Beaunier’s 1938 edition of Les Carnets de Joseph Joubert, published by Gallimard from Joubert’s autograph manuscripts. Volume I presents the entries on printed pages 32–475. French and English are aligned paragraph by paragraph, retaining the source order, printed dates and page references so readers can return to the facsimile.
