Explanation of the Golden Chain of Homer

German & Latin

1723 scan 14

The Golden Chain of Homer: Explanation of the Golden Chain of Homer

1723 scan 14

The volatile kingdom of animals bears witness to this; Neither volatile nor fixed—mark that well. The vegetable hermaphrodite Also shows from what it has been forged. Fixed earth and stones bear witness That they belong to nitre and salt. Fire and air, water and earth, Seek their active share from it. When the noble seed of the world has been made fixed, Brought out of vapour and water into earth, Then that which all the world most highly prizes Has been made and accomplished. The volatile must become fixed, Must turn from water and vapour into earth; And when it becomes a red, dry blood, It is the world’s treasure and highest good: A perfect perfection That drives away all poverty and sickness.
