4 How This Universal Seed Was Generated and Born
The Golden Chain of Homer: 4 How This Universal Seed Was Generated and Born
1723 pp 13–14It must be so, and this rule of nature cannot be overstepped. Unite heaven with air, air with water, and water with earth. Or reverse the order: unite earth with water, water with air, and air with heaven or fire. Heaven is then turned into earth, and earth into heaven. Heaven is very subtle. Air is also subtle, but one degree coarser than heaven; water is one degree thicker and coarser than air, and earth one degree thicker and coarser than water. One must therefore proceed step by step in nature’s own most beautiful order. Then a rightly concentrated harmony and a true operation producing quintessence arise. All chymical operations must proceed in this way, or little will be accomplished. Someone may object: “Your proposition does not quite fit the case. How can air be only one degree subtler than water, and water one degree subtler than earth, when we see that water is several degrees coarser than air and earth many degrees coarser than water?” To answer this, the practitioner must understand that heaven, like air, water and earth, is divided into its own degrees of subtlety and coarseness, and that these elements are themselves subdivided. The coarsest earth does not immediately mix with thin water, because one earth is coarser and thicker than another. So it is with the others.
