Publication and Transmission

The London Volume of 1650

The title page of Magia Adamica advertises an added discovery of the true Coelum Terrae, the magician’s heavenly chaos and first matter of all things. The imprint is London, printed by T. W. for H. Blunden at the Castle in Cornhill, 1650. The TCP bibliographic record identifies Wing V151 and ESTC R203905 and records a British Library Thomason witness. Its annotation October 29 belongs to that recorded copy; it is not presented here as a separately established day of publication.

The Collected Reprint of 1888

Arthur Edward Waite included Coelum Terrae in The Magical Writings of Thomas Vaughan, published by George Redway in London in 1888, with a biographical preface, an essay and translations of Latin passages. The Wellcome digitisation of that book is useful for comparison and for the history of Vaughan’s later reception. Its nineteenth-century framing is kept distinct from the 1650 work.

The TCP Transcription

The TEI header for EEBO-TCP A64768 records keying in 2001, editorial work in 2002 and an electronic publication statement dated March 2009. The header also records the release of the Phase I texts into the public domain on 1 January 2015. This transcription supplies searchable, structurally encoded evidence from a first-edition witness, including page boundaries, citations and recorded gaps.

The Diotimos Reading Edition

This 2026 edition returns to the 1650 textual basis, uses available first-edition page images to examine readings, provides a modern English text and fresh foreign-language translations, and adds clearly labelled study material. Its new pagination is independent of the historical pagination retained in passage locators.
