How to use this edition

Each comparison passage has a stable identifier, such as I.003.1 or II.126.1, and a locator in the original printed pagination. I and II indicate the source’s two parts. The following figures anchor the passage to its starting source page and distinguish successive units there. A unit can cross a printed page boundary when this preserves a complete sentence or a useful division in the argument. The glossary cites these identifiers; its references lead to particular uses, not to every occurrence of a term.

For a first reading, the two proems, Theorems IV–VII, Part II Chapters One and Two, Chapter Ten and the conclusion provide the clearest account of the undertaking. A continuous reading then shows how the natural-historical discussions, objections, examples and theological controversies test those initial claims. The outline supplies the sequence without turning its editorial summaries into extra original chapters.

In the bilingual fixed-page edition, compare a source passage with its corresponding English passage by identifier and source locator. The reflowable editions preserve that pairing while allowing the screen to determine line and page breaks. The English-only edition retains the source locators, notes and glossary so that passages can still be checked against the chosen facsimile.

The English differentiates the author’s own claims, the authorities he quotes, an objection he reports and the position he refutes. This is especially necessary in the letters on light. Read each letter as an argument with its own speaker before connecting the reply to the later account of substance and renewal. Likewise, the homunculus chapter reports a claim in order to reject it.

Explanatory notes identify scriptural references, terminology, historical allusions and material ambiguities. They also distinguish a personal observation from a report received through another person and identify conspicuous errors in the original references. The original registers retain historical page references; the editorial outline follows the actual locations in the body. Source page numbers refer to the 1680 printing, not to a current PDF viewer’s image count.
