1651 English
147 [sequence; printed 143]For why may not the mother be naught, a peevish drunken flurt, a waspish cholerick slut, a crazed peece, a fool, (as many mothers are) unsound as soon as the nurse? There is more choice of nurses then mothers; and therefore except the mother be most vertuous, staid, a woman of excellent good parts, and of a sound complexion, I would have all children in such cases committed to discreet strangers.
And ’tis the only way; as by marriage they are engrafted to other families to alter the breed, or if any thing be amisse in the mother, as Ludovicus Mercatus contends, Tom. 2. lib. de morb. hæred. to prevent diseases and future maladies, to correct and qualifie the childes ill-disposed temperature, which he had from his parents. This is an excellent remedy, if good choice be made of such a Nurse.

p. 316For why may not the mother be wicked, a bad-tempered drunken hussy, a waspish, angry slattern, a deranged creature, a fool—as many mothers are—and as unsound as the nurse? There is more choice of nurses than of mothers. Therefore, unless the mother is thoroughly virtuous, steady, a woman of excellent abilities and a healthy constitution, I would have all children in such cases entrusted to sensible women outside the family.
And this is the only way—just as through marriage they are grafted into other families to change the stock—if anything is wrong with the mother, to prevent diseases and future maladies, and to correct and moderate the child’s disordered constitution inherited from his parents, as Luis Mercado argues in volume 2, in his book On Hereditary Diseases. This is an excellent remedy if a good choice is made of such a nurse.

Robert Burton’s Anatomy ranges across medicine, philosophy, poetry, religion, and everyday life in its inquiry into melancholy. This complete parallel edition pairs the 1651 English text with a close modern English rendering, preserving the three Partitions, Democritus Junior’s address to the reader, verse, and the historical index.
Historical Text and Translation
The historical text follows the sixth edition, printed at Oxford for Henry Cripps in 1651, using the McGill University Library copy. The supplied edition documents missing printed pages 98–99 supplied from another 1651 copy at the Bavarian State Library. Historical folio labels and their irregularities remain visible; web reader numbers identify reflowed passages and do not claim to reproduce PDF pagination.
