The Anatomy of Melancholy: Note on the Text

p. 10

The attachment of a marginal note follows the words it explains, rather than its height on the printed page alone. A marginal passage can extend beside several lines or across a page boundary. The annotations follow the recorded connection with the body text, including places where two nearby references concern different subjects. Material appearing once in the margin is not duplicated merely because a later sentence recalls it. Conversely, an author's genuine repetition is not removed as an accidental duplication. A quoted passage and Burton's separate restatement can both be necessary to the reader's understanding.

Editorial notes distinguish three situations: a reference or quotation transcribed from Burton; a source passage or relevant parallel independently located; and an attribution or detail still unresolved. These are descriptions of evidence, not interchangeable marks of certainty. A close parallel may explain an allusion without proving which edition Burton used. A quotation found in a named author may still have reached Burton through another writer. A story's presence in an identifiable source establishes that source's testimony, not necessarily the truth of the reported event.

Corrections and the limits of comparison

Corrections to transcription, interpretation and note placement have been assessed against the base images, the paired passages, existing annotations and saved comparisons. Earlier printings, other copies and identifiable primary sources have been consulted for particular difficulties where recorded. This edition does not claim a complete collation of all historical printings, every surviving copy or every work Burton cites. It offers a reading text with documented local decisions, rather than a reconstructed text supported by an exhaustive apparatus of variants.

A comparison may settle one question while leaving another open. It may establish a page label, the wording of a marginal quotation or the meaning of a clause without identifying the precise intermediary through which Burton encountered it. An uncertain technical sense can likewise be disclosed even where a defensible general rendering is possible: condition renders the printed astrological word case at page 309, with the limit of that interpretation stated in the note. The distinction between a settled editorial treatment and a fully resolved source history is maintained.

The bibliography gathers resources recorded in the preparation and comparison of the text. Repeated references to the same resource address are grouped while their differing descriptions and scopes are preserved. Distinct editions, language versions and page-specific addresses remain distinguishable. Inclusion in that record does not certify every attribution or assertion associated with a resource. The local note or comparison supplies the relevant finding and its limit. Unresolved scholarly questions remain visible without implying that the reader is being offered a fully authenticated chain of transmission for every quotation.

Navigation and forms of the edition

Burton's sections and synopses provide the principal structure. Where a printed synopsis and a body heading disagree, the source reading is retained and explained; the modern synopses follow the corresponding body headings. An incomplete or prospective cross-reference is not given an invented destination. The alphabetical Table retains its entries and printed locators. Its numbers refer to the source edition, not to pages in the new layout. Links are supplied only where a subject has been checked against its destination. Most numerical locators remain unlinked, and a matching topic does not by itself prove which number the indexer intended.

The annotated PDF and DOCX place the older and modern texts side by side. The annotated EPUB places corresponding passages in sequence so that they can reflow on a screen; Markdown preserves the annotated edition in a text format. The modern-English-only EPUB contains the modern rendering and navigation, without the original column, footnotes, Introduction, this textual note or the lexicon. These different presentations serve different reading preferences. The source record and the paired text remain the means of examining an editorial choice when a closer comparison is wanted.

About This Reading Edition

Robert Burton’s Anatomy ranges across medicine, philosophy, poetry, religion, and everyday life in its inquiry into melancholy. This complete parallel edition pairs the 1651 English text with a close modern English rendering, preserving the three Partitions, Democritus Junior’s address to the reader, verse, and the historical index.

Historical Text and Translation

The historical text follows the sixth edition, printed at Oxford for Henry Cripps in 1651, using the McGill University Library copy. The supplied edition documents missing printed pages 98–99 supplied from another 1651 copy at the Bavarian State Library. Historical folio labels and their irregularities remain visible; web reader numbers identify reflowed passages and do not claim to reproduce PDF pagination.
