Aphorismi Urbigerani: About This Edition
p. 2About This Edition
This edition presents the complete printed 1690 Aphorismi Urbigerani represented by the Getty Research Institute copy: the engraved frontispiece and its inscriptions, the historical title and licence, the dedication, all one hundred and one principal aphorisms, the separately titled Circulatum Minus with its address and thirty-one aphorisms, and the entire concluding postscript explaining the figure. Both printed closing words are retained. The selected publication occupies ninety-six scanned surfaces, including five original blanks; those blanks are accounted for in the source inventory without being turned into invented passages.
The governing text is English. The dedication says that its author is then in England, is not native to that kingdom, and has chosen to publish in English. The new reading modernises that English and translates the Latin inscriptions, mottos, titles, and expressions afresh. Baro Urbigerus remains the authorial name printed in the volume. The edition does not infer an earlier Latin original from the Latin short title.
The original wording accompanies the modern reading in the parallel edition. The English-only EPUB provides the same complete modern reading, annotations, and study features, with the historical frontispiece and translated inscriptions. Stable passage references connect the aphorisms and postscript with interpretive essays, a historical glossary, contextual lexicon entries, relations across the work, an emblem guide, reading routes, study questions, and the subject index. These supporting features are editorial contributions; their interpretations can be checked against the linked historical passages.
