XI–XXI: Union and the Vegetable Essence · Vegetable Elixir · Aphorism XIX
Original English
XIX. If into this your Vegetable Elixir you put any green Vegetable, shred in pieces, it will in less than half a quarter of an hour without any external Heat putrify, and precipitate it self into the bottom quite dead, (which is nothing but the cursed Excremental Earth) and on the Top will swim a yellow Oil, containing the Salt and Sulphur, and the Elixir will be of the Color of the Plant, comprehending its Vegetable Spirit: which if it does not, 'tis a sign, that your Operations have not been Philosophical.
Modern English
XIX. If you put any green plant, shredded into pieces, into this vegetable elixir, in less than half a quarter of an hour, without any external heat, it will putrefy and fall to the bottom quite dead. This is nothing but the accursed excremental earth. A yellow oil containing the salt and sulphur will float on top, and the elixir, containing the plant’s vegetable spirit, will take on its colour. If it does not, this is a sign that your operations have not been philosophical.
