At a Glance
The word. A material described by taste and whiteness in comparison with calx.
In the book. Calx supplies the point of comparison, not an explicit statement that the material is itself a calx.
A place to read. The historical definition below, 1650 dictionary, unnumbered definition page 42; facsimile PDF page 370.
Historical Definition
Sanguis calcetus is that which has as sharp a taste as calx and is as white.
Meaning
The definition is comparative. Quick taste is rendered as sharp taste; the sentence also supplies a white appearance. These sensory qualities are the entire identifying description given by this entry.
Use in the Book
Calx supplies the point of comparison, not an explicit statement that the material is itself a calx. The distinction preserves the compiler’s wording while leaving the obscure name open to contextual identification.
