Body disease and historical medicine · A Chymical Dictionary

At a Glance

The word. A condition identified through the historical name St Anthony’s fire.

A place to read. The historical definition below, 1650 dictionary, unnumbered definition page 11; facsimile PDF page 339.

Historical Definition

Brunus is St Anthony’s fire.

Meaning

The dictionary resolves one unfamiliar word through another historical disease name. That is useful, but it is not the same as a present-day diagnosis. The entry provides no symptoms or cause with which to establish a unique correspondence. This edition therefore preserves the historical identification and leaves any more precise medical interpretation to a cited account of the actual case.

In a text, distinguish the disease name from references to ordinary fire or a furnace. The short entry concerns a condition, despite the fire language in its identifying name.
