At a Glance

The word. A residue term rather than the name of one fixed material.

A place to read. The historical definition below, 1650 dictionary, unnumbered definition page 16; facsimile PDF page 344.

Historical Definition

Chymus is feces or residue.

Meaning

The historical identifying word concerns matter left or rejected in a process. The entry does not specify the starting substance or operation, so a precise composition cannot be inferred from the headword alone. The surrounding passage must identify what remains and what has been removed.

Caput mortuum gives a more operationally qualified example: residue after distillation or sublimation. Caseus præparatus describes a viscous settled residue in a dairy setting. These comparisons show why a general residue word can apply to materially different things without making them interchangeable.

Places to Read

Caput mortuum. The material left behind by distillation or sublimation.

Caseus præparatus. A dairy residue identified by consistency and where it settles.

Excrementa. Superfluities described through expulsion by Nature.
