At a Glance
The word. The planetary name Jupiter denotes tin here.
In the book. Luna similarly names silver, while Luna compacta names quicksilver.
A place to read. The historical definition below, 1650 dictionary, unnumbered definition page 28; facsimile PDF page 356.
Historical Definition
Iupiter is tin.
Meaning
The dictionary makes a direct equivalence between a planetary name and a metal. In a material passage, Iupiter can therefore name tin without asserting that the writer is discussing the planet itself. The headword’s initial I is a spelling form retained for recognition and searching.
Use in the Book
Luna similarly names silver, while Luna compacta names quicksilver. The added word in a compound can alter the material intended. Read the complete expression before applying a planetary equivalence.
Places to Read
Luna. The lunar name denotes silver.
Luna compacta. A lunar compound assigned to quicksilver.
