At a Glance

The word. A name glossed as Jupiter.

In the book. Calx Iovis names a spirit of tin, while Lato is described through copper and lapis calaminaris.

A place to read. The historical definition below, 1650 dictionary, unnumbered definition page 18; facsimile PDF page 346.

Historical Definition

Cydar is Jupiter.

Meaning

The definition supplies Jupiter and nothing more. Elsewhere the dictionary explicitly identifies Iupiter as tin, so the reader has a route from this unfamiliar word to the book’s metal vocabulary. That route depends on the second entry, rather than on a further claim printed here.

Use in the Book

Calx Iovis names a spirit of tin, while Lato is described through copper and lapis calaminaris. These examples remind a reader to distinguish a planetary name for a metal from a preparation or combination involving it. Cydar itself does not describe a preparation.

Places to Read

Calx Iovis. A tin-related calx name glossed as a spirit.

Iupiter. The planetary name Jupiter denotes tin here.

Lato. Copper identified after treatment that gives it a gold-like colour.
