At a Glance

The word. Two names identified with sulphur.

A place to read. The historical definition below, 1650 dictionary, unnumbered definition page 15; facsimile PDF page 343.

Historical Definition

Chybur, or Cibur, is sulphur.

Meaning

The entry explicitly authorizes the variant Cibur. Its main purpose is to make an unfamiliar spelling recognizable, not to specify a prepared form. Other sulphur entries in the dictionary add qualifications concerning things or particular treatments, so the reader should preserve any modifier in the source passage.

Alcubrith and Kibrith provide further routes into the name family. The links aid lookup across spellings without proving that every historical sulphur preparation was materially identical.

Places to Read

Alcubrith. Three alternative names for sulphur.

Kibrith. A second short name for sulphur.

Sulphur rerum. The sulphur of things used as a name for their quintessence.
