At a Glance
The word. Names for practitioners habitually occupied with fire.
In the book. Vulcanus supplies the corresponding direct fire name.
A place to read. The historical definition below, 1650 dictionary, unnumbered definition page 47; facsimile PDF page 375.
Historical Definition
Vulcanii or Vulcanici are those who continually work about fire.
Meaning
The subject is people and their activity. Continually describes their characteristic occupation. The entry does not itself identify them as spirits dwelling within fire.
Use in the Book
Vulcanus supplies the corresponding direct fire name. Salamandri, by contrast, are spirits or fiery men dwelling in fire. Preserving the verbs, working about and dwelling in, prevents different kinds of beings and practitioners from being confused.
Places to Read
Salamandri. Spirits or fiery men associated with residence in fire.
Reverberatorium. A furnace defined by flame calcination.
Vulcanus. A name directly equated with fire.
