At a Glance
The word. The lunar name denotes silver.
In the book. Luna compacta is defined as quicksilver, and Lunaria as the sulphur of Nature.
A place to read. The historical definition below, 1650 dictionary, unnumbered definition page 30; facsimile PDF page 358.
Historical Definition
Luna is silver.
Meaning
The equivalence gives a material reading of the planetary name. In a passage about metals, Luna may therefore mean silver rather than the celestial moon. The dictionary does not make every occurrence of the word in every kind of discourse metallic.
Use in the Book
Luna compacta is defined as quicksilver, and Lunaria as the sulphur of Nature. Their qualifying forms matter. Reading them all as ordinary silver because they begin with lunar language would collapse distinctions the compiler has preserved.
Places to Read
Luna compacta. A lunar compound assigned to quicksilver.
Lunaria. Lunar naming applied to Nature’s sulphur.
