At a Glance
The word. A plant identified by a historical devotional name.
In the book. Diapensia gives lady’s-mantle through another name, while Geluta is the herb called Chameleon.
A place to read. The historical definition below, 1650 dictionary, unnumbered definition page 26; facsimile PDF page 354.
Historical Definition
Iassa is the herb of the Trinity.
Meaning
The entry gives a name rather than a botanical description. It does not identify the features, habitat or use of the herb. The reference to the Trinity should therefore be preserved as the supplied name without inventing an explanation of how a particular plant represents it.
Use in the Book
Diapensia gives lady’s-mantle through another name, while Geluta is the herb called Chameleon. Such entries preserve historical naming practices with different kinds of associations. Iassa receives no additional evidence from which this edition can securely assign a modern species.
Places to Read
Diapensia. A plant glossed through Alchamilla and lady’s-mantle.
Geluta. A plant identified by the historical name Chameleon.
